The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 67

1954 Chrysler Imperial
***NO RESERVE*** Uber stylish, UK-registered Late-production ‘Yank Tank’

Registration - 458 XVW

Chassis No - 7780423

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 43,400

This very striking lefthand drive Imperial had been on static display as part of a private collection prior to being purchased by the vendor a year ago. Its dramatic black and chrome exterior is teamed with a largely refurbished blue interior that is brimming with up-market details peculiar to the period – eg the thin-rimmed, chrome-spoked steering wheel, the central button of which is colourfully labelled ‘Power Steering’; the engine-turned instrument surround; and facia-mounted push-button radio. Other items of note are the green tinted windows, white-walled tyres and distinctive bonnet mascot. This is a car of real presence that, following his acquisition, the vendor had UK registered and treated to a reconditioned steering box, refreshed door cards and a service. He now considers the V8 engine, automatic transmission, four-door saloon bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition. The Chrysler comes without history.

Chrysler’s use of the Imperial name for its luxury models dates all the way back to 1926 and continued until 1954, after which it became a brand in its own right. The first of the post-war Imperials were relatively conservatively styled, and it was not until 1949 that the model was given a more flamboyant look. Based on the New Yorker, the newcomer was powered by the company’s ‘FirePower’ 331ci (5.4 litres) Hemi V8 engine linked to a three-speed ‘Fluid Drive’ (ie automatic) transmission. Always generously equipped, these sixth generation Imperials were offered in a wide range of body styles, giving the Chrysler dealers a genuine rival to the products of Cadillac and Lincoln. Production volumes were relatively low, however, making the Imperial an ever more collectable model today, and a rare sight on UK roads. The 1954 version had much to commend it. With an output of 235bhp its Hemi engine guaranteed good performance, while the contemporary transmission, and inclusion of powered steering, brakes windows and seats provided a level of comfort and convenience the vast majority of Americans would not experience for many years to come.

In summary:

  • An LHD example from the last year of Chrysler Imperial production
  • Part of a private collection until last year
  • UK registered and currently displaying a credible 43,400 total miles
