November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 67

1982 Ford Cortina Crusader 1.6 Saloon

Registration - BWK 326Y

Chassis No. - WF0FXXGBBFCJ69451

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 34,435

This 1.6-litre saloon version of the Crusader matches pale gold paintwork to beige velour interior trim. It has for some years formed part of a large private collection and the vendor describes the car as being in ‘very good original condition’. According to Experian Autocheck it had had only four previous keepers and the odometer still only displays an unwarranted, though totally credible, 32,435 miles from new, so ‘BWK 326Y’ should certainly have plenty of life left in it. It is powered by the 1.6-litre Pinto engine linked to a four-speed manual gearbox and is now being offered complete with factory-fitted glass sunroof, integral Ford sound system, owner’s manual, and a sizeable history file containing old tax discs, MOTs and invoices.

A legend of its time, the Ford Cortina was produced in five generations over the 20 years between 1962 and 1982, during which period it dominated the UK sales charts. The last of the breed (the MKV) was introduced in 1979. Codenamed Teresa and heavily based on its predecessor, it was half way between a facelift and a re-body. Visual differences included a flattened roof, bigger glass area, slimmer C pillars, larger tail lights and upgraded trim, all of which brought the styling in line with the rest of Ford’s model line-up. The so-called Crusader was the run-out version of the MKV and the best-appointed of all versions of the Cortina. Thirty thousand saloon and estate versions were sold during 1982 before the all-conquering Cortina range was replaced by that of the radically different Sierra.

In summary:

  • An apparently very original example of the last of the Cortinas
  • Just five keepers and 32,435 indicated miles from new
  • Most recently part of a large private collection
