The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 67

1982 Land Rover 109 Stage One V8
Rare Stage 1 V8 109

Registration - NYN 48Y

Chassis No. - SALLBCAV1AA158535

M.O.T. - September 2022

Odometer - 72,670

Niche models generally have added attraction for collectors and it’s no surprise they appear to be hanging on to Series III Stage One V8 long wheelbase Land Rovers, only just over 100 of which are thought to remain road legal. ‘NYN 48Y, therefore represents a rare opportunity for Landie lovers everywhere. It was apparently acquired by its current owner – its seventh to date – in 2010. Two years later it was treated to a restoration by Land Rover specialists Liveridge British 4x4 Ltd of Solihull. The work included respraying the vehicle in Land Rover Heritage Green and replacing the V8’s standard carburettors with a more modern Weber four-barrel conversion, which we are told has added some 20bhp at the wheels, thereby improving both the performance and economy. Prior to the respray the Land Rover was white and at one point served as an outside broadcast vehicle for the BBC in and around London, and it retains some of the related features such as side lockers to this day. Currently registering a very credible total mileage from new of 72,670, the Land Rover is currently considered by the vendor to have ‘good’ 3.5-litre engine, transmission, long wheelbase bodywork, paintwork, and grey/black interior trim. The green bodywork is complemented by a khaki-coloured tilt, while the bonnet and wing tops have been clad with chequerplate.

The Series III Land Rover reigned from 1971-1985. Outwardly it was almost identical to the IIA, aside of a plastic rather than metal radiator grille. The gearbox boasted synchromesh on all ratios, while the more modern cab featured a moulded plastic facia, and the instrument cluster was moved from its long-standing home in the centre to the driver’s side.

In summary:

  • One of only 100 or so Series III Stage One V8s built
  • Restored and repainted by Liveridge British 4x4 in 2012
  • Formerly used by the BBC for outside broadcasts around London
