Lot 68

1963 Wolseley 1500

Registration - 363 UAE

Chassis No. - WHS219851

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 61,298

Examples of the Wolseley 1500 and its Riley 1.5 stablemate rarely come to market these days, and many have sadly succumbed to the tin worm over time. It is therefore heartening to be offering for sale this tidy specimen that’s finished in the attractive combination of dark blue bodywork, light blue leather upholstery augmented by polished wood trimmings, cream-coloured steel wheels, and a considerable degree of lustrous chrome. ‘363 UAE’ has been in its current ownership since 2013, but not driven since lockdown began. However, the vendor confirms it is ‘an extremely good runner’ and currently considers the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, four-cylinder 1489cc BMC B series engine and four-speed manual transmission to all be in ‘good’ order. Since purchasing the Wolseley, he has treated it to a new clutch and set of brake cylinders. There are, however, a few minor points he has been honest enough to raise – ie the bonnet currently needs assistance to remain in the fully open position; the driver’s seat would now benefit from some additional padding; there is evident corrosion at the leading edge of the rear off/side wing; and there’s a minor chip above the offside headlamp. This fun and affordable British classic is now being sold complete with heated rear screen, radio, and full complement of rear view mirrors.

The Wolseley and Riley twins were launched in 1957 and broadly speaking combined the floorpan, steering and suspension of the Morris Minor with the engine and gearbox of the MG Magnette. Some 103,394 Wolseley 1500s had been made by the cessation of production in 1965.

In summary:

  • A charming survivor of a now relatively rare model
  • The brake cylinders and clutch have been replaced in recent times
  • 61,298 highly credible but unwarranted miles from new
