Here we have an apparently unmolested example of the rare four-door Escort 1300 GT model. Its red bodywork is complemented by a black cloth interior and it has had just five keepers to date, the first of whom was a Southport-based doctor who retained the Ford for 10 years. He then sold it to his son, who passed the GT onto his mother. The vendor acquired the car some three and half years ago, since when he has installed electronic ignition, a new distributor, fresh wiper arms and blades, plus LED rear brake light bulbs, and treated the Escort to an oil and fluids service. He now rates the four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ condition, and is offering the car for sale complete with full maintenance history covering the last 20 years, plus MOT certificates from 1991 to 2021.
Ford’s phenomenally successful Escort made its debut at the 1968 Brussels Motorshow. It was a direct replacement for the long running Anglia range and, while much of the mechanicals were carried over, the styling was far more contemporary. Power came from a choice of 1100 or 1300cc versions of the Crossflow ‘Kent’ engine, which drove through a slick four-speed manual gearbox or three-speed automatic unit and on to the rear wheels. Suspension was by MacPherson struts at the front and live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, while the Escort was the first Ford to feature rack and pinion steering. The 1300 GT version featured a mildly breathed on Weber-fed version of the 1300cc powerplant, uprated suspension and additional instrumentation.
