November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 68

1977 Land Rover Series III Carmichael
A splendid and very original working Guernsey fire engine.

Chassis No. - 91259224C

Registration - NPO 833R

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

If you grew up wanting to own a fire engine, then here’s your chance. Converted new by Carmichael of Worcester, this splendid Series III long wheelbase Land Rover, call sign Fire 7, was in service with the Guernsey fire brigade for 18 years before spending a further six with their counterparts on the neighbouring island of Alderney. Boasting a water tank capacity of 200 gallons and pump rating of 500 gallons per minute, it has operated as both a strike vehicle and reserve emergency tender. Regarded by the vendor as being in ‘great condition’, it is still fitted with its pump, pipes, breathing apparatus and a selection of its original tools. Its 2.2-litre engine drives through a four-speed manual transmission. ‘NPO 833R’ is now being offered in full livery and complete with: original letters from the Guernsey and Alderney fire brigades; a copy of a related 2004 feature in Land Rover Monthly; service records; and receipts for repairs carried out over the years. A rare opportunity to acquire a working fire engine for service or private enjoyment.

The ubiquitous Land Rover steadily progressed from a single offering in 1948 to a family of long and short wheelbase derivatives with an ever increasing choice of engines. The Series III of 1971-1985 is the most common, of which 440,000 were produced. Outwardly it was almost identical to the IIA, but the diesel-engined version benefited from a higher compression ratio and the gearbox from synchromesh on all ratios, while the cab featured a more modern, moulded plastic facia.

In summary:

  • A splendid and apparently very original working fire engine
  • Comes complete with pump, pipes, breathing apparatus etc
  • Accompanied by history of 24 years’ service in the Channel Islands
