An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 68

1980 Vauxhall Chevette L
Previously part of a 30-strong collection of Vauxhalls

Registration - LBF 731V

Chassis No. - M2KX101137

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 42,653

We classic car people tend to become very attached to our chosen steeds, and parting with them can be an emotional experience. There is no doubt that the vendor of this time warp Chevette would be retaining the car were it not for the intervention of ill health, so it deserves to find a suitably sympathetic new home. It previously formed part of a collection of 30-plus Vauxhalls that were rescued from a barn in 2001. Since acquiring the car the vendor has replaced: the clutch; carburettor; half shafts; brake discs, pads and shoes; dampers and battery, and fitted a stainless steel exhaust system. An enthusiast owner and member of the Vauxhall Car Club, he has made regular use of the Chevette that has been garaged throughout his tenure. He informs us that the car has benefited from Bodyshield Rustproofing throughout and is a ‘very original, corrosion-free’ example. In summary he considers the 1256cc engine and four-speed manual gearbox to be in ‘excellent’ order, and classes the four-door bodywork, maroon paintwork and red fabric interior trim as ‘good’. He is now reluctantly offering the car for sale complete with large history file and an extensive selection of spare parts - which due to the quantity, can be collected from the vendor, who lives locally. The odometer currently indicates an unwarranted but wholly credible 42,653 miles from new.

The Chevette (baby Chevrolet) was Vauxhall’s version of its parent company’s so-called ‘T- Car’ programme, versions of which were marketed around the world under different names. The model was inspired by the 1973 fuel crisis and, though clearly diminutive by US standards, slotted in neatly below the Viva in the UK. The comprehensive range comprised a three-door hatchback, both two and four-door saloons, a three-door estate and three-door van. Combining an improved version of the Viva’s 1256cc OHV engine with the Chevette’s relatively light body made for a rewarding level of performance.

In summary:

  • A time warp example of a now rare model – one of only c.65
  • Previously part of a 30-strong collection of Vauxhalls
  • Comes with an extensive selection of spare parts
