March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 68

1996 Jaguar XJR 4.0

Registration - PI64 0GS

Chassis No. - SAJJPALF3BP790663

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 145,500

A well-presented example of a desirable model, ‘P164 OGS’ is finished in the attractive combination of Antigua Blue bodywork and beige hide upholstery. The vendor informs us that it is rust free throughout and was recently treated to a service, supercharger rebuild, and replacement brakes, drop links, wheels bearings, engine mounts and tyres. It also benefits from stainless steel rear exhaust boxes and an ‘Andy bracket’ engine timing modifier, so sounds and goes as a Jaguar should. He currently rates the engine, automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’, and the interior as ‘average’, though there seems little amiss aside of a split driver’s seat bolster. He is now offering this charismatic cat complete with radio/cassette player, sunroof, four keys, two fobs and two folders full of history. The odometer currently registers c.145,500 and the vendor confirms that the XJR is ‘a well cared for car that has been used most days and never let him down’.

Codenamed X306, the XJR of 1996 was a high-performance version of Jaguar’s much-vaunted XJ saloon, that was powered by a forced induction version of the company’s AJ16 straight-six engine. The combination of its Eaton M90 supercharger and an air-water intercooler raised output of the proven powerpalnt to 321bhp and 378 lb ft of torque, which was sufficient for a 0-60 acceleration time of around 6.6 seconds. Almost all the 6,547 XJRs produced were fitted with the optional GM automatic transmission as opposed to the standard Getrag manual unit. The model differed from the rest of the XJ range in running 17 rather than 16in wheels, which were of a special five-spoke alloy design. It also sat 10mm nearer to the ground and featured firmer suspension. Other visual clues to its identity were relatively subtle, and limited to a body-coloured grille surround with mesh insert, colour-keyed boot-lid plinth, larger exhaust tailpipes and matt black rain gutter and window surrounds.

In summary:

• A well-presented, apparently corrosion-free example

• Recently treated to a service and number of replacement

• parts

• Benefits from stainless steel back boxes and ‘Andy bracket’ timing modifier
