The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 69

1948 Alvis TA 14 Saloon

Registration - LRB 990

Chassis No. - 21016

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This lovingly-presented Alvis is accompanied by a comprehensive history. It vacated the factory in May 1947 apparently bound for a company called Morkell and Carnil, and its one-off alloy body was the work of Car Panels (Nuneaton). It was registered new to its first owner, a Mr Leslie Roberts of Littleover, Derby on February 9 1948, who retained the car until 1956. It then passed to the Atkinson family, also of Derby, in whose care it remained until 1991. However, it was the next keeper, a Mr A Ward of Sheffield, who was responsible for having the Alvis restored to its current condition, though some additional remedial work was carried out by Fisher Restorations of Droitwich as recently as 2018. The sparkling blue coachwork is perfectly complemented by the car’s original grey leather upholstery, that has clearly stood the test of time well. The vendor informs us that the Alvis ‘starts easily, accelerates well and has positive steering and effective braking’. It is now offered complete with buff and green log books, MOTs dating back to 1978, detailed ownership history, correspondence with the factory, an invoice and photos relating to the restoration, maintenance record, handbooks, factory drawings, Alvis club literature and spare keys. A unique opportunity.

The TA 14 was Alvis’s first post-war offering and sold from 1946 to 1950. It was available as a four-door saloon or two-door drophead coupe, and was based on a widened and lengthened pre-war Alvis 12/70 chassis and powered by an enlarged 12/70 engine – an 1892cc four-cylinder unit of c.65bhp. Some 3,311 examples of the model were produced during its four years of production.

In summary:

· A uniquely-bodied example, so effectively one of a kind

· Professionally restored 18 years ago and still in fine order

· Just six owners from new and lots of history
