The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 69

1951 Land Rover 80 Series 1
Retains its period five-digit registration number. The recent subject of much restoration and maintenance

Registration - RPB 38

Chassis No - 26101629

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 93,000

In the eyes of most classic vehicle enthusiasts, Series I Land Rovers are the crown jewels of the 4x4 world, meaning there is always a ready market for good ones. Most of course have by now had numerous owners, whereas this charming 1951 aluminium bulkhead example has had just three from new. Once diesel powered, it nowadays sports a 2-litre petrol unit. ‘RPB 38’ is presented in Bronze Green that’s teamed with green vinyl interior trim, a grey canvas tilt and cream steel wheels. It has been the subject of much recent maintenance, which has included extensive chassis welding and a respray, plus the replacement of: the gearbox cross member, leaf springs front and rear, steering ball joints, charging system, fuel tank and pump, exhaust, tyres and lights, plus the fitment of an aftermarket steering damper and Series II heater. The Landie has also benefited from a full service, and is now felt by the vendor to have ‘excellent’ transmission (including an aftermarket overdrive), bodywork and paintwork, ‘good’ engine and electrics, and ‘average’ upholstery. He is now selling the vehicle complete with internally mounted spare wheel, temperature gauge, tow hook and an extensive history file that apparently contains receipts and invoices from each period of ownership, provenance concerning the aluminium bulkhead, and a Heritage Certificate.

That the last of the original Defenders are immediately recognisable as a direct descendent of the Land Rover launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, is huge testimony to Maurice Wilks’ original design. The model steadily progressed from a single offering powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine to a complete family of long and short wheelbase derivatives with an ever-increasing choice of engines. By the time of the Series IIA of 1969-1971, Land Rover production was at its all-time peak - over 60,000 vehicles per annum. In addition to record sales, the model dominated many world markets, accounting for around 90 percent of the 4x4 sector in Australia, Africa and the Middle East.

In summary:

  • A splendid three-owner Series I Land Rover
  • The recent subject of much restoration and maintenance
  • Comes with extensive history from new
