November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 69

1983 Ford Fiesta XR2
Winner of the best hatchback award at the Classic & Sports Car Spectacular at Tatton Park this year.

Registration - A715 ATV

Chassis No. - VS6BXXWPFBDE60413

M.O.T. - May 2022

Odometer - 28,000

This very well-presented MK1 XR2 evidently won ‘Best Hatchback’ award at the Classic & Sports Car Spectacular at Tatton Park this year. Purchased by the vendor in 2019, it was then treated to a considerable level of refurbishment that required the removal of the doors, windows, bonnet and tailgate, the fitment of new wings, front panel, windscreen headlights and carburettor, plus a full respray. Now resplendent in its original black livery, it considered by the vendor to have excellent 1600cc ‘Kent’ engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and paintwork, and ‘good’ grey-striped interior trim. He is now offering the Ford complete with sunroof, immobiliser, period push-button radio, good set of Hankook tyres, XR2 mats, pair of keys, the original owners’ manuals and a current MOT valid to May 16 next year.

Ford’s Fiesta was an instant hit when it went on sale in 1977. The supermini was produced in a number of variants, but there was not a notably sporty version until the short-lived 1.3-litre Supersport was introduced in 1980. It was in 1981 that the company phased out the Supersport and introduced the XR2, describing it in advertisements as ‘Highly tuned but not highly strung’. The sportier styling, alloy wheels, sports suspension, 1598cc engine, 0-60mph time of 9.3 seconds and top speed of 105mph all helped the XR2 to swiftly become beloved by boy – and girl - racers everywhere. The MK1 XR2 was replaced in 1983 by the MK2 version. Early examples of the breed such as the sale car are now increasingly sought by collectors.

In summary:

  • A well-presented award-winning example of Ford’s popular hot hatch
  • The subject of considerable refurbishment in 2019
  • MOT’d into May next year
