  Lot 69

1984 Mazda RX7
Rare first generation model, consigned from long-term ownership recently featured in Practical Classics Magazine

Registration - A7 RCE

Chassis No. - JMZFB131200702114

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 141,887

This fine first generation Series 3 RX7 has remained within the same ownership for the last 29 years, prior to which the engine was rebuilt by HME Rotary of Coventry and treated to a twin SU carburettor conversion and free-flow exhaust system. The Mazda has been serviced annually regardless of mileage, and the gearbox and axle oils changed every five years. The body, which was resprayed in 2012, has been regularly washed and polished and the car always garaged. It has featured in a number of classic car magazines and retained for summer use only, during which it has attended and won prizes at numerous car shows over the years – it has also featured on the RX7 Owners Club stand at the NEC Classic Show. The proud vendor currently considers the twin-rotor engine, five-speed manual gearbox, red bodywork and black/grey cloth interior trim to all be in ‘excellent’ condition. He is now offering the Mazda complete with sunroof, JVC radio/CD player, the cherished number ‘A7 RCE’, selection of invoices, and a current MOT valid to May 2 next year.

Mazda’s love affair with the Wankel rotary engine dates back to the Cosmo of the 1960s and continues today with the RX8. Its immediate predecessor, the RX7, first saw the light of day in 1978 and was then developed through three generations before being replaced in 2002. The original version was a breath of fresh air in the otherwise largely conventional world of road going sports cars. It sold well too, with a total of 474,565 being produced in an eight year run, 377,878 (ie almost 80 percent) of which found homes in the USA. In 2004, the respected magazine Sports Car International named the model seventh on its list of Top Sports Cars of The 1970s.The second (FC) generation version featured a complete restyling, deliberately somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche 944, which was selling well in America at the time.

In summary:

  • Remained within the current ownership for the last 29 years
  • Engine professionally rebuilt and upgraded c.46,000 miles ago
  • The subject of many magazine articles and car show trophies
