March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 69

1992 Jaguar Sport XJR 4.0
Only three owners from new

Registration - J862 NLM

Chassis No. - SAJJPALD3AD662095

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 140,000

Make no mistake – this is a rare car and one of only 20 such models currently licenced for UK roads. At first glance it may look like any other XJ40, but a detailed inspection confirms it to be one of the sought-after high-performance XJR versions built by Jaguar Cars and then uprated by JaguarSport of Bloxham. It is presented in the pleasing combination of Flamingo Red bodywork and red-piped magnolia-coloured leather trim. It had had just three keepers to date who have clocked up 140,000 miles between them. Following a recent service, the vendor considers the Jaguar’s straight-six engine, automatic transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition, and is selling this apparently very original well-maintained car complete with full service history (24 stamps), all its original handbooks and keys, toolkit and a selection of old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid into November.

Following numerous delays, the all new XJ6 (XJ40) was finally launched in October 1986 as a replacement for Jaguar’s ageing Series III cars. More evolutionary than revolutionary, it boasted all-round independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and generous levels of sound deadening. It proved to be a credible alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series and was well received by the contemporary UK motoring press. The newcomer was initially available with a choice of two variants of the straight-six AJ6 powerplant – the 2.9-litre SOHC unit or the 3.6-litre DOHC engine. However, by 1989 Jaguar had been bought by Ford, who changed the engine offerings to a 3.2-litre DOHC unit or a 4.0-litre DOHC one. The built-to-order XJR variant was a JaguarSport product, born of a partnership between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw’s TWR concern. The modifications included: uprated camshafts, superior inlet manifolds and a tweaked ECU; enhanced suspension with unique Bilstein dampers; body-coloured bodykit; unique Speedline alloy wheels shod with wider tyres; special interior trim. With 251bhp on tap, the model could sprint to 62mph in 7.7 seconds and top 145mph flat out.

In summary:

  • An apparently very original well-maintained example
  • One of just 20 such models currently licensed for UK roads
  • Just three keepers from new
