  Lot 7

1990 Lotus Elan M100 SE Turbo

Registration - H708ATV

Chassis No. - SCC100ZT1MHD16232

M.O.T. - August 2022

Odometer - 58,900

For a model that had so much praise bestowed upon it at birth, M100 Elans are surprisingly few and far between. This pretty blue SE Turbo example is coming to market for the first time in 10 years, boasting the relatively low mileage of 58,900 that, according to Experian Autocheck, has been accrued by a total of nine keepers. Unseen on rain-swept roads for years, ‘H708 ATV’ has benefited from the fitment of a number of new parts. They include: cam belt; water pump; racing-specification radiator; and brake discs, calipers and pads, while the original alloy wheels have been refurbished and shod with the correct specification of Michelin tyre. Included in the sale, but not currently fitted to the car, is its original Alpine stereo unit. The vendor informs us that the battery light is occasionally illuminated whilst the car is running, due to a suspected faulty diode in the instrument cluster, but that the car still charges well and there is no real detriment to its running. The vendor volunteers that there is still room to further improve the Elan and bring it fully up to standard, but confirms it is ‘totally useable’ and ready for a new keeper to enjoy.

The major departure of the M100 was the use of frontwheel drive – a configuration not employed by Lotus before or since. At launch, the pretty newcomer was described by Autocar as ‘the quickest point to point car available’. It was powered by a Lotus-modified 1,588 DOHC Isuzu unit. Most customers opted for the SE model that featured a 162bhp turbocharged version of the engine and power steering as standard. Autocar’s test of the SE achieved an impressive 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 137mph. By the time production of the Elan ceased in 1992, some 3,855 had been delivered from the Hethel factory.

In summary:

  • The recent beneficiary of a number of new parts
  • Said to ‘drive as it should with stunning performance’
  • Boasts a relatively low total mileage of 58,900
