The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 7

1990 Lotus Elan M100 SE Turbo
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - G497 UMW

Chassis No. - SCC100ZTILHD16277

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 78,000

‘G497 UMW’ has been in the care of its current keeper for the last 10 years. Its white bodywork is matched to black and red interior trim and the car rides on its original set of Lotus alloy wheels. We understand the cambelt was renewed in 2013, since when the little Elan has travelled little more than 500 miles – the odometer currently registers an unwarranted but totally credible total of 78,000. The vendor informs us that the Lotus ‘starts and drives as it should, has a good hood and very tidy leather seats’. In summary he classes the Isuzu engine, five-speed manual gearbox and upholstery as ‘good’ and the two-seater bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. He is now offering it for sale complete with a Cobra alarm system, Pioneer stereo, original owner’s manual, partial service history and a selection of invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one valid into July of next year.

Being a small, fibreglass-bodied two-seater constructed over a rigid steel chassis, the M100 certainly conformed to the general philosophy of Lotus’s late founder, Colin Chapman. The major departure was the use of frontwheel drive – a configuration not employed by Lotus before or since. The newcomer was powered by a Lotus-modified 1,588 DOHC Isuzu unit. Most customers opted for the SE model that featured a 162bhp turbocharged version of the engine and power steering as standard. Autocar’s test of the SE achieved an impressive 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 137mph. By the time production of the Elan ceased in 1992 some 3,855 had been built.

In summary:

  • Treated to a cambelt change in 2013 and travelled just 500 miles since
  • Has a notably smart leather interior
  • Comes complete with Pioneer stereo and Cobra alarm
