If you are in search of one of the more punchy second generation SLKs, then this 3.5-ltre V6 example could well be of interest. A notably tidy specimen inside and out, it has had just two keepers from new who’ve amassed a modest 49,320 miles between them. The smart silver bodywork is matched to black leather interior trim, while the car rides on period-correct five-spoke alloy wheels. The Benz’s comprehensive specification includes Airscarf, the system that provides neck-level warming via vents in the head restraints. We understand that a new subframe was fitted nine months ago, along with new rear brake discs and pads. The vendor now considers the engine, seven-speed automatic transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order and is now making the car available complete with full service history (main dealer and specialist), and a new MOT.
Mercedes-Benz’s SLK was introduced in 1996 as a competitor for the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3 and was among the first models to feature an electro-hydraulic retractable hardtop. The first generation examples (codename R170) were manufactured until 2004, when they were superseded by the substantially revised R171 Series. This longer wheelbase model brought many revisions including: sharper styling; a galvanised, stiffer bodyshell; two-stage airbags; a faster-folding retractable roof; fabric wind-blocker; a new line-up of engines from a supercharged in-line four-cylinder unit of 1.8 litres to a normally-aspirated V8 of no less than 5.4 litres. The SLK 350, as per the sale car, was powered by a 3,498cc V6 unit delivering 268bhp – sufficient to accelerate the Benz to 62mph in c.5.5 seconds and to a top speed of 155mph. A six-speed manual transmission was standard, with the option of a seven-speed automatic unit.
In summary:
· A very tidy second generation example with full service history
· Just two owners and 49,320 miles from new
· Equipped automatic transmission and Airscarf heating system
