The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 70

1961 Jaguar MK2 2.4
UK supplied 2.4 with manual gearbox and overdrive

Registration - KCC 435

Chassis No. - 108942DN

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 70,714

While many MK2 fans understandably lust after the most powerful 3.8-engined version, the short stroke 2.4-litre model was in fact much freer revving, and is arguably better appreciated today than in period. The example offered has a splendid history courtesy of just four owners. It was first registered in Caernarfon on July 10, 1961 to a Mrs Lilian Tipping and has remained within the care of its current keeper for the last 29 years. The vendor informs us that an exchange engine complete with a pair of HD6 SU carburettors was fitted in 1977, while in 1992 the Jaguar was treated to a full bare metal respray and a change of colour from the original grey to the current dark blue, and in 1995 a stainless steel exhaust, halogen headlight bulbs and seat belts were installed. In 2001/2002 the body was again repainted and the interior reconditioned.

Four years ago the engine bay was repainted and the engine completely rebuilt by a Jaguar specialist – the car has only covered 2,200 miles since that work was completed. Coincident with the rebuild, the brake cylinders and pipes were renewed, while a new battery has been fitted as recently as March this year. The vendor currently classes the XK engine and overdrive transmission as ‘excellent’, the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’, and the paintwork as ‘average’. He adds that the engine ‘looks and sound super’. He is now offering this much cared-for car complete with its original tool kit and Philips radio, extra wheels, badge bar, original buff log book, over 30 years’-worth of MOTs, numerous tax discs, invoices, paint code, and a pair of genuine Jaguar workshop manuals as well as a Haynes one.

In summary:

  • A clearly well cared-for example that’s won awards at various shows
  • Comes complete with lots of history courtesy of just four keepers
  • Taking account of a speedometer change in 1999, the total mileage appears to be 122,822
