The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 70

1964 Mercedes-Benz 220B

Registration - EBY 726B

Chassis No. - 11101020055164

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

The quality of German cars is still admired to this day, and one can’t help but be impressed by the design and engineering of this 59-year-old motorcar. It is presented in its original livery of gunmetal grey and trimmed in cream leather throughout. Despite being a righthand drive example it was apparently first registered in Paris, since when it has spent the majority of its life in sunny Nice. The bodywork appears to be in very good order, as is the paint that has received some attention in the last few years. The interior remains suitably palatial, with no apparent signs of damage or decay. The Benz would appear to have been well-maintained too, and we understand that in the recent past new carpets and underlay have been installed, the carburettors refurbished, and the spark plugs, battery, exhaust system, fuel pump, distributor cap, gearshift bushes, windscreen rubber and whitewall tyres all replaced. Following a couple of years of dry storage, the 220B is considered by the vendor to have ‘good’ engine, manual transmission and bodywork, and ‘average to good’ paintwork and upholstery.

Mercedes’ imposing family of W111 saloons was in production from 1959 to 1968, and was memorable for the distinctive tailfins that earned it the nickname of ‘fintail’ or heckflosse in German. It made its debut at the Frankfurt Salon and initially consisted of three models – the 220B, 220SB and 220SEB, all of which were powered by the company’s M127 straight-six engine of 2195cc, that was carried over from the preceding W180 model. In 220B form it produced some 95bhp, which was sufficient to accelerate this relatively heavy car to a terminal speed spot on the once magic 100mph.

In summary:

  • A fine RHD example that was first UK registered in 2018
  • Has spent most of its life to date in the south of France
  • The subject of a good degree of recent maintenance
