November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 70

1974 Jensen-Healey MKII

Registration - VLN 703M

Chassis No. - 14063

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 54,141

Judging by the information provided, this tidy MKII Jensen-Healey has been the subject of much time and investment. Evidently the floor pans and sills have been patch welded and undersealed. The many replacement items include: brake pads, cylinders and handbrake cable; exhaust, which is now stainless steel; radiator, hoses and thermostat; battery; speedo, throttle and choke cables; fan and timing belts; spark plugs; oil pressure pipe; tank sender unit; fuel gauge; headlights; and hazard switch. Components that have been refurbished include: brake servo; alloy wheels; seats; carpets; sun visors; and steering lock. ‘VLN 703M’ teams Old English White bodywork with black interior trim. Included in the sale are: Jensen-Healey branded hood and tonneau covers; a partially refurbished hardtop; tool kit and jack; and a selection of spares. The vendor volunteers that neither the push-button stereo nor cigarette lighter are currently operational, the gearbox is leaking oil, and the paintwork features a couple of small blisters. The Jensen-Healey’s odometer currently registers a very credible though unwarranted 54,141 miles over 47 years, and the car is now being sold complete with its original production card and owner’s manual.

Launched in 1972, the Jensen-Healey was powered by the four-cylinder, 2-litre, twin-cam, Vauxhall-based Lotus 907 engine which drove through the four-speed Chrysler gearbox of the Sunbeam Rapier. The independent front suspension and live rear axle came courtesy of the Vauxhall Firenza, as did the rack and pinion steering and the disc/drum braking system. The MKII version of 1973 brought an upgraded interior with wood-trimmed facia, padded centre console, revisions to the headlamp surrounds, and federal-style bumpers. The open two-seater was produced from March 1972 until early 1976, during which time some 10,500 examples were manufactured.

In summary:

  • A clearly cared-for example of a relatively rare breed
  • Evidence of much refurbishment
  • An apparently low, though unwarranted total mileage of 54,141
