March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 70

Lot 70 - 1975 Rover 2200 SC

1975 Rover 2200 SC
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - LYF 792P

Chassis No - 47605231A

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This very usable-looking automatic transmission 2200 SC is part of a deceased estate and being offered at No Reserve. It was first registered in December 1975 and has had 12 keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired the Rover in 2017. Its black over white bodywork is matched to black upholstery and beige carpets. The fine-looking high-back front seats are understood to be from a more modern car, while those in the rear have been retrimmed to match. The vendor informs us that the SC is ‘very solid’ and ‘runs well’. The odometer currently indicates a credible but unwarranted total mileage of 80,863. A potentially rewarding lot, that’s one of only 87 automatic 2200 SCs remaining in the UK.

Designed in-house by Spen King, David Bache and Gordon Bashford and launched in 1963, Rover’s P6 model bristled with innovation and was rightly the winner of the first ever European Car of the Year Award. Its monocoque shell featured bolt-on panels, braking was by discs all-round and the steering by Marles worm and roller, while the fully independent suspension comprised a novel de Dion arrangement at the rear and an equally unique rocker system operating horizontally-mounted coil springs at the front. The car was initially powered by a 1978cc (hence the 2000 name) single OHC in-line four-cylinder unit of 104bhp. A slightly more powerful twin-carburettor version (the TC) joined the ranks in 1966, and was followed by the silky V8 model (3500) two years later. It was in 1973 that the capacity of the four-cylinder cars was increased to 2205cc, to minimise the drop in power resulting from new emission laws (especially in California), and the so-called 2200 SC and 2200 TC were born. Some 322,302 P6 Rovers of varying engine capacity were produced before the range was superseded by the SD1 in 1977.

In summary:

  • Entered from a deceased estate and being sold at No Reserve
  • Features more modern high-back front seats
  • One of only 87 2200 SC autos remaining in the UK
