November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 71

1967 Rolls-Royce Mulliner Park Ward
A very pretty two-door pre-Corniche believed to have been used by an ex general for state parades.

Registration - YHR 311E

Chassis No. - CRH3443

M.O.T. - June 2022

Odometer - 20,225

This pleasingly unmolested two-door saloon version of the Silver Shadow came off line in 1967 and is understood to have spent some time in the USA where, wearing the number plate ‘RR 11’, it apparently served as a general’s parade vehicle - the car still retains its related Ministry of Defence sticker. The black paintwork is complemented by red coachlines, nicely patinated red-piped black Connolly leather upholstery, burr walnut wood trim and red Wilton carpets. The vendor informs us that ‘YHR 311E’ ‘starts and drives beautifully with no knocks or funny noises, and that there are no issues with the automatic gearbox or braking system’. He does, however, volunteer that the paintwork would benefit from some attention in one or two areas and that the front windows occasionally ‘play up’. He is now offering this rare Rolls-Royce complete with a good set of Pirelli tyres, chrome badge bar, Optimus radio/CD player and a current MOT that’s valid into June of next year.

The two-door saloon derivative of the Silver Shadow was introduced in 1966. There were two different versions – one by James Young, of which only 35 Rolls-Royce-badged examples were produced, and the arguably more shapely Mulliner Park Ward (MPW) design of which 606 are understood to have been sold by 1971. At that point the derivative was relaunched as the Corniche, a name extracted from the Rolls-Royce archives. As you’d expect from a motorcar bearing the names of two of Britain’s finest coachbuilders, the MPW was the height of quality and luxury and priced accordingly.

In summary:

  • A pleasingly unmolested example of a rare breed
  • Currently indicating an unwarranted but credible 20,225 miles
  • Served as a general’s parade car in the USA
