The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 71

1973 Triumph Stag
***NO RESERVE*** Complete with hardtop and a comprehensive history file

Registration - JOL 646L

Chassis No. - LD13920BW

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 101,921

This smart, red 1973 Triumph Stag comes complete with soft top and black hardtop with lever operated quarter windows, so offers the best of both motoring worlds. An early MkII model, it features the double coachline and black sills, for a more sporting look. Offered at No Reserve, ‘JOL 646L’ has the desirable four-speed manual transmission with overdrive and has been subject to a full, documented restoration. The original Triumph engine has been replaced with a three-litre Ford Essex V6 engine and the car has been tastefully upgraded with power steering, new brake sensors, new cylinders, a touchscreen, Bluetooth-compatible radio/MP5 player and replacement alloy wheels shod in Firestone tyres. The current owner rates the engine, transmission electrics, paintwork and interior as ‘good’ and the bodywork as ‘average’. The Stag comes complete with a comprehensive history file including service history, handbook and MOT certificates, together with cardboard boxes containing spare parts. Serviced in May 2023, ‘JOL 646L’ has an MOT to 19 May 2024. MOT records from 2009 and 2010 show that the car passed 100,000 miles and went ‘round the clock’ during that year. Subsequent MOT records indicate that the car has been very little used since 2010 and appear to support the odometer reading which shows that the car has covered just under 102,000 miles in its 51 years.

The British-built Stag was designed to compete with the established SL models from Mercedes-Benz. Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, it was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that saloon. The powerplant, however, was an all-new OHC V8 unit of 2997cc, fed by a pair of Zenith Stromberg carburettors. The Stag received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, customers encountered problems concerned the camshaft drive chains, cylinder heads and gaskets, water pumps and waterways of the new engine. Restorers have long since solved such maladies. Production ceased in 1977 after some 25,877 examples had been made – c.9,000 of which have survived in the UK.

In summary:

  • A well maintained MkII Stag, offered at No Reserve
  • Offered complete with hard and soft top plus a comprehensive history file
  • Benefited from a full restoration and the installation of a 3L V6 Ford Essex engine
