The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 71

1983 Land Rover 88 Series III
Fully restored and upgraded, including teak-effect loading bay, heated luxury seats and USB ports

Registration - HCJ 531X

Chassis No - LBAAG1AA149972

M.O.T. - November 2024

Odometer - 21,243

If you’re drawn to Land Rovers that are battered and bruised – ie rolling exhibits of a hard life – then ‘HCJ 531X’ is not for you, as it’s immaculate from the tip of its black front bumper to that of its totally corrosion-free rear cross-member. Long term Landie enthusiasts have apparently described it ‘as the nicest example they have ever seen’, and who are we to argue. Its extraordinary condition is the result of 12 month’s hard labour by a father and son team. Following a painstaking ground up restoration they finished the Series III’s bodywork in Marine Blue, which is complemented by teak-effect flooring for the load bay and tan coloured heated seats (yes really!), operated by a period-correct Lucas switch. While installing replacement wiring, the team apparently improved upon the original earthing points and added some USB ports. The remarkable ensemble is topped off by a fresh canvas tilt, while the black-painted steel wheels sport brand new all-weather tyres. It comes as no surprise that the vendors now consider the 2.25-litre diesel engine, 4x4 transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order. They believe the currently indicated mileage of just 23,000 to be genuine.

The Series Land Rover steadily progressed from a single offering powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine to a complete family of long and short wheelbase derivatives with an ever-increasing choice of engines. By the time of the Series IIA of 1969-1971, production was at its all-time peak - over 60,000 vehicles per annum - and in addition to record sales, the model dominated many world markets. The Series III of 1971-1985 is the most common version, of which 440,000 were produced. Outwardly it was almost identical to the IIA, aside of a plastic rather than metal radiator grille. The optional diesel engine benefited from a higher compression ratio and the gearbox from synchromesh on all ratios, while the cab featured a more modern, moulded plastic facia and the instrument cluster was moved from its long-standing home in the centre to the driver’s side.

In summary:

  • An immaculate freshly restored example ready for a new life
  • Comes with teak-effect load bay, heated luxury seats and USB ports
  • An apparently low mileage Landie complete with 12 months’ MOT
