  Lot 71

1991 BMW 318i Convertible

Registration - J938 EWR

Chassis No. - WBABA51030EJ27262

M.O.T. - June 2022

Odometer - 125,000

This smartly-presented BMW was first UK registered in September 2000. Its white bodywork is teamed with blue cloth trim and a blue hood and the Beemer rides on BBS alloy wheels. The vendor informs us that the car ‘is his pride and joy and only used for shows, at which it has won awards’. He presently grades the convertible bodywork, paintwork, 1800c engine and five-speed manual gearbox as ‘excellent’, the interior as ‘good’, and the alloy wheels as ‘unmarked’. Apparently the carpets have recently been professionally cleaned, new brake lines installed and the oil changed. ‘J938 EWR’ is now reluctantly offered for sale for health reasons and comes complete with a fresh MOT certificate, but without the badges shown in the accompanying images.

Now in its seventh generation, BMW’s 3 Series is an automotive phenomenon and unique among the world’s executive expresses. Since succeeding the 2002 model in 1975, it has generally accounted for 30 per cent of the company’s annual car sales, is the bestselling car in its class, almost as well known in America, Asia and Australia as it is in Europe, and has frequently outsold much cheaper rivals. The model’s second incarnation, the E30, took to the roads in 1982. During its 10-year production run it could be purchased in no less than five body styles – two and four-door saloon, five-door touring and two-door convertible. Temporarily dropped in 1985, the 318i reappeared in 1987 sporting a new SOHC powerplant. Suspension was independent all round by MacPherson struts, lower wishbones and coil springs at the front and semi-trailing arms and coil springs at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion.

In summary:

  • A very affordable prestige convertible
  • Recent maintenance
  • Unmarked BBS alloy wheels
