By nature commercial vehicles tend to lead a hard life, but is a penance that appears to have eluded ‘558 TYB’ that we understand served as a garden centre/nursery delivery vehicle before acting as a plumber’s mate for the last 11 years. The green exterior paintwork contrasts well with the grey of the cab and its brown vinyl upholstery. A plaque within the cab tells us that the pickup conversion was carried out by B. Walker & Sons Ltd of Watford, and the vendor presently considers this very tidy four-owner vehicle to have ‘excellent’ bodywork, paintwork, and interior trim, and ‘good’ 1508cc four-cylinder engine and four-speed, column-change manual gearbox. The odometer currently reads an eminently credible, though unwarranted, 55,781 total miles.
The pug-nosed CA commercial vehicle was produced by Bedford from 1952 to 1969. Generally supplied as a light delivery van with sliding doors, it was also available as a ‘chassis with cowl’ to which specialist bodywork could be added as required, of which ‘558 TYB’ is a perfect example. Now rare, the CA can be considered as the Ford Transit of its day, and no less than 370,000 examples were built during its 17-year production run.
