  Lot 72

1972 Rover P5B 3.5 Litre Coupe
In current ownership for 23 years

Registration - JPG 402K

Chasis No. - 84008384D

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 17,424

Good examples of Rover’s luxurious P5B are few and far between these days, but keenly sought. This handsome example presents well with its Arden Green bodywork topped by a cream roof and complemented by cream leather interior trim. It rides on period-correct Rostyle wheels that are shod with Federal tyres all-round. In 2005 it was treated to a ‘sympathetic restoration’ by TR Classic of Oosterhout in the Netherlands, where at the time the Rover was owned by a local hotel and used as a wedding car. It was acquired by the vendor in May 2020, who informs us that on his watch it has been meticulously maintained and recently equipped with new rear wheel cylinders, water pump, brake fluid reservoir, over-mats, an H4 headlight conversion and new period-style seat belts. Among the car’s many notable features are a stainless steel exhaust system, battery isolation switch, and original Radiomobile 1070 radio converted to FM and equipped with auxiliary cable. He currently considers the V8 engine, automatic gearbox, saloon bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order, and is offering ‘JPG 402K’ complete with a spare windscreen, comprehensive history file and a current MOT valid to February 19, 2024.

Rover’s elegant P5 series was launched in 1958. It was initially powered by the 3.0-litre straight-six engine of the P4 saloon - its stable-mate until the introduction of the all new P6 in 1964. Designed by David Bache, the luxuriously-equipped 3-Litre featured independent front suspension with wishbones and torsion bars and a live axle at the rear mounted on semi-elliptic leaf springs. A MKII version offered more power and the option of a striking coupe body. The final iteration of the P5, the P5B, appeared in 1967. At this point the venerable ‘F’ headed 3-litre six-cylinder engine was replaced by a Buick-derived 3.5-litre all-alloy V8 – the unit that was eventually to power not only numerous Rover-branded vehicles, but various Morgans, Triumphs, MGs and TVRs. As fitted to the Rover 3.5 Litre, the unit had an output of 160bhp, which was sufficient to grant the updated model with notably better performance and economy than its predecessors.

In summary:

  • A fine-looking example now registering a total mileage of 117,424
  • The subject of a ‘sympathetic restoration’ in 2005
  • Equipped with a number of new parts and a selection of upgrades
