November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 72

1973 Saab 96 V4

Registration - WUD 936M

Chassis No. - 96732018859

M.O.T. - Oct 2023

Odometer - 62,907

If you’ve not seen a Saab 96 for a while it’s not that surprising, as the five-owner sale car is one of only 200 currently licensed for UK roads. It has apparently only covered around 150 miles a year following its acquisition by the vendor in 2019, but is certainly well presented, having been treated to a general overhaul and respray by Highgate Saab back in April 2000, and more recently benefiting from its Toyo-shod wheels being freshly powder coated – when not in use, the Swede has been dry-stored throughout. The vendor informs us that it is ‘pretty tidy and free of rust and rot’, but volunteers that ‘the seats (especially the rear one) would now benefit from some attention’. In summary he grades the four-speed column-shift transmission, two-door bodywork and red paintwork as ‘excellent’, the 1498cc Taunus V4 engine as ‘good’, and the red cloth upholstery as ‘average’. He is now offering the car complete with a pair of auxiliary instruments, a set of air horns, and an extensive ring-bound history file containing no less than 119 receipts. The odometer currently sits at 62,907 miles.

Eric Carlsson put Saab and its 96 model on the map by winning the RAC Rally from 1960 to 1962 and the Monte Carlo Rally in 1962 and 1963. His wins were achieved with power from Saab’s two-stroke engine, but by 1967 there was the option of a four-stroke unit. Products from seven manufacturers were considered, but it was Ford’s V4 Taunus unit that was eventually installed. The freewheel facility fitted to the two-stroke cars was retained, as was the column gearchange.

In summary:

  • A well-presented example of a much-loved but relatively rare model
  • The subject of a general overhaul and respray in 2000
  • Comes with large history file containing 119 receipts
