September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 72

1977 Porsche 924
Recently completed restoration to an excellent standard

Registration - UEX 594R

Chassis No. - 9247104614

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 96,484

This early UK specification 924 was delivered new to Porsche Cars GB during March 1977 as part of the model’s roll-out to our market, and then first registered three months later. Scroll forward to today, and it has benefited from a comprehensive body and mechanical restoration by IK Sport Classic of Holmfirth, which was followed by a professional respray in the correct shade of Mars Red. In order for the interior to match the quality of the outside, the front seats were retrimmed in black pinstripe fabric as per the original build specification supplied for the purpose by Porsche Stuttgart. Adding everything together, the vendor reckons he has invested at least £18,000 on bringing the car 924 up to scratch, and currently considers the engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order. He is now making the car available for somebody else to enjoy, and selling it complete with original service book and a selection of invoices and old tax discs, MOTs etc.

The 924 served as Porsche’s entry-level model from 1976 to 1988 and effectively supplanted both the mid-engined 914 and the 912. It was the first Porsche to be powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine and the first to be offered with a fully automatic transmission. A joint venture with VAG, it was penned by Porsche designer Harm Lagaay and built by Volkswagen employees at the former NSU factory in Neckarsulm. As launched, the newcomer’s 2.0-litre Volkswagen engine was mated to an Audi-sourced four-speed manual transmission. Suspension was independent all round by MacPherson struts at the front and semi-trailing arms linked to torsion bars at the rear. Braking was by discs/drums and steering by rack and pinion.

In summary:

  • A very early UK example delivered new to Porsche Cars in March ‘77
  • The recipient of a comprehensive restoration
  • Recent expenditure considered to be at least £18,000
