September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 73

1970 Rover 2000
Only 38,000 recorded miles

Registration - BFH 228J

Chassis No. - 40062857K

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 38,000

The design of Rover’s P6 model was ahead of its time and the clean lines of this lovely 2000 still look fresh today. Its beige paintwork is twinned with a black leather interior, the passenger seats of which look as though they’ve barely been sat on. The car’s had just four keepers from new, (the first two of whom were husband and wife) and the quartet have accrued a very modest total of 38,991 miles between them. Within the last few years it has been treated to a stainless steel exhaust system, while the water pump, brakes, tyres and battery have all been replaced with new items. The vendor currently rates the 2-litre engine and four-speed manual transmission as ‘excellent’ and the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’, and says ‘BFH 228J’ is ‘very reliable and presentable’. He is now offering it complete with sunroof, auxiliary driving lights, radio/cassette, floor mats and its original bill of sale and specification, plus a degree of history.

Designed in-house by Spen King, David Bache and Gordon Bashford, the P6 bristled with innovation and was rightly the winner of the first ever European Car of the Year Award. Its monocoque shell featured bolt-on panels, braking was by discs all-round and the steering by Marles worm and roller, while the fully independent suspension comprised a novel de Dion arrangement at the rear and an equally unique rocker system operating horizontally-mounted coil springs at the front. The car was initially powered by a 1978cc (hence the 2000 name) OHC in-line four-cylinder unit of 90bhp. Some 322,302 P6 Rovers of varying engine capacity were produced before the range was superseded by the SD1 in 1977.

In summary:

  • A very tidy four-owner, 38,991-mile example
  • Comes complete with sunroof, auxiliary lights and radio/cassette
  • Has stainless steel exhaust and new brakes, tyres, and battery
