  Lot 73

1976 Porsche 911 Targa

Registration - OAW 176P

Chassis No. - 9116311182

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 138,798 kilometres

This eminently affordable lefthand drive Targa began active life in its native Germany, arriving on these shores exactly 20 years later. Since then it has had six keepers, the most recent of whom acquired the car in 2011, yet has only added some 2,000 miles to the total so far accrued of 86,749 (138,798 kilometres). He currently considers the black and grey interior trim to be ‘good’, the engine and four-speed manual transmission to be ‘average’, and the Guards Red paintwork to be ‘below average’, adding that the Porsche would really benefit from a respray. He is now offering the car complete with its German logbook.

After a lengthy gestation period, the now ubiquitous Porsche 911 entered production in 1964. The design was the work of Dr Ferry Porsche’s eldest son, Ferdinand ‘Butzi’ Porsche and the company’s joint founder and chief body engineer Erwin Komenda. The car featured rack and pinion steering and both torsion bar suspension and disc brakes all round. It was initially powered by a dry-sump, air-cooled, 2-litre, flat-six engine which was overhung at the rear and allied to a five-speed manual transmission. In 1968, the 911’s wheelbase was increased by 57mm, and the rear overhang reduced by the same amount. At the same time, some 22lb was saved from the (overhung) engine crankcase by switching its manufacture from aluminium to magnesium. These changes greatly improved the car’s handling. Since its birth, the 911’s story has been one of such continual evolution. The engine capacity was increased in stages to 2.2 litres and then 2.4 litres, and in 1974 it rose to 2.7-litres.

In summary:

  • A lefthand drive example that came to the UK in 1996
  • A very affordable route into Porsche ownership
  • Just 2,000 miles travelled in the last 10 years
