November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 73

1978 MG B Roadster

Registration - TWV 983S

Chassis No. - GHN5-458035G

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 14,524 since new Ivor Searle engine

‘TMV 983S’ was first registered in May 1978, which meant it vacated the Abingdon factory with federal style rubber bumpers. However, as part of a restoration carried out by the previous keeper in the early 2,000s, it also underwent a personality change, so its traditional British Green paintwork now contrasts not only with chrome bumpers, but chrome wire wheels that replaced the original steel disc variety. The reformation also included the installation of an Ivor Searle engine, a complete respray and replacement of the interior, plus the fitment of a new black hood and set of tyres, while the brake system has been overhauled as recently as this year. The vendor now classes the B Series engine, overdrive gearbox, bodywork and white-piped black upholstery as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork as ‘good’, and is offering the roadster complete with both full and half tonneau covers, Sony CD/radio, Astrali woodrim steering wheel, alloy rocker cover, photo CDs of the restoration, driver’s handbook, pair of keys and a selection of old invoices and MOTs, plus a current certificate valid to November 18 next year. The mileage covered since the restoration was completed is 14,524.

The MKII MGB of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with improved ratios and synchromesh on all gears. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the car’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced rubber bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These changes were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for some 80 percent of MGB production from day one.

In summary:

  • The subject of a full restoration in the early 2000s
  • Converted from rubber bumper to chrome specification
  • Good specification includes Ivor Searle engine
