The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 73

1978 Volkswagen T2 Minibus
LHD seven-seater example, previously used for marketing by the Fosters Lager Company

Registration - YKO 817S

Chassis No - 2382144893

M.O.T. - October 2024

Odometer - TBC

This attractive lefthand drive T2 is a rare automatic example, which spent the first 32 years of its life in Finland, where it was employed by a publicity agency in the promotion of Fosters lager – hence the blue, red and gold décor of the colourful interior and references to the brand. The bus is currently configured as a seven-seater. There is a 240 volt fridge in the luggage area from where cold beer was dispensed, and lots of stowage under the seats, making it perfect for festivals etc. The vendor purchased the VW in Finland in 2008 and had it UK registered two year later. He informs us that the 2-litre engine was replaced at the 100,000 kilometer mark, since when a further 15,334 kilometers have been travelled. Uprates include and electric fuel pump and electronic ignition, and he now classes the 70bhp engine and electrics as ‘excellent’, and the three-speed gearbox, bodywork, blue paintwork and interior trim as ‘good’. ‘YKO 817S’ rides on a set of six-spoke Image alloy wheels, and is now being sold complete with a current MOT valid into November next year.

The Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle was Type 1) dates back to 1949, and has long since acquired cult status courtesy of such diverse celebrity owners as Jamie Oliver, Martin Clunes, Roger Daltrey and Jenson Button. It has been home to generations of travelling Australians, helped hippies survive the ‘60s/‘70s and become the transport of choice for many a surfer. Variously available in Van, Bus, single and double cab Pick-up, Kombi and Camper guises etc, it would probably have been nicknamed the ‘car that changed the world’ if the Model T hadn’t got there first. The immortal ‘split screen’ T1 variant remained in production until 1967, when it was replaced by the single screen T2. Currently in its sixth generation, what is now known as the Volkswagen Transporter continues to be successfully marketed worldwide.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented lefthand drive seven-seat example

  • Previously used to promote Fosters lager in Finland
