Lot 73

1980 Princess 2 2000 HL

Registration - DJL 808V

Chassis No. - PT4SGS167146M

M.O.T. - July 2021

Odometer - 26,400

So when did you last see one of these distinctive Harris Mann-penned Princesses then? Certainly this one seems to have been hidden away for part of its life and is thought by the vendor to have been part of a museum collection at one stage, which would certainly help explain the apparently very low mileage of 26,400. Usage in the current ownership has been limited to shows rather than day to day travel. It certainly seems to be a very original example that teams red bodywork with beige/brown cloth trim, the condition of which the vendor says is ‘fine except for the top of the rear seat which has suffered sun damage’. She also volunteers that the seat springs are ‘a bit tired’, and that the fuel tank sender no longer works. Overall, she presently considers the bodywork, paintwork, upholstery, O Series four-cylinder engine and three-speed automatic gearbox to all be in ‘average condition’. She is now offering this relatively rare classic complete with: fully refurbished Hydrolastic suspension system courtesy of specialists Hydragas and Hydrolastic Service Ltd; recently-replaced tyres; power steering; front head rests; contemporary audio unit with USB connectivity, plus a current MOT valid to July 13.

As launched in March 1975, the model was sold under the Austin, Morris and Wolseley banners, but only six months later the entire range was rebranded ‘Princess’. The main change that brought about the Princess 2 of July 1978 was the replacement of the venerable B Series engine with the more modern O Series unit, at which point the capacity of the four-cylinder options rose from 1800cc to 2000cc.

In summary:

  • An apparently very original example
  • Understood to have covered just 26,400 miles from new
  • Has benefited from a complete renovation of its Hydrolastic suspension
