The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 74

1972 Chesil Speedster

Registration - SFX 469K

Chassis No. - 223023489011061015R

M.O.T. - March 2023

Odometer - 10,597

What we have here is a very attractive example of Chesil’s renowned replica of the Porsche 356 Speedster. Its metallic blue bodywork is paired with contrasting blue-piped cream leather upholstery and cream-piped blue carpets, and the car rides on steel wheels with highly polished chrome rims and hub caps. Its power is supplied by a 1971cc Porsche 914 engine that boasts twin Weber carburettors topped by performance air filters, flat top pistons, a fast road cam, aluminium-finned rocker covers, twin oil coolers, four-into-two performance exhaust, electronic ignition and a 911 fan conversion. The overall attention to detail is impressive, and includes both Porsche and Reutter badges (the latter a nod to the Karosserie that crafted the bodies of the original cars), Porsche seat belt buckles, a storage bag for the glass side windows and carpet for the boot. The vendor considers the engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and interior trim to all be in ‘excellent’ order, and is now offering the Speedster complete with new cylinder head and battery, digital GPs speedometer, Clifford CAT 2 alarm and immobiliser, Moto-Lita woodrim steering wheel, high-grip pedals, period correct chrome luggage rack, Panasonic radio/cassette, car cover, two ring-bound history files, and a current MOT valid to March 27 next year. Retained in the same ownership for the last three years, ‘SFX 469K’ has been kept for special occasions – the credible, though unwarranted, overall mileage currently stands at just 10,597.

Founded in 1991 the Chesil Motor Company is best known for its replicas of the Porsche 356 Speedster. Based on a shortened Volkswagen Beetle chassis they were clothed in glassfibre bodies. A total of around 500 examples are understood to have been built.

In summary:

  • A very well presented example of a fun car
  • Benefits from a number of upgrades and great attention to detail
  • Comes complete with lots of history and a current MOT
