1987 Peugeot 309 GTi Group N Rally Car
FIA paperwork and a previous entrant at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Rally Stage

The GTi on offer was constructed from a Peugeot Sport UK kit and made its class-winning debut on the 1988 Wexford Rally in the hands of Mark Wagstaff. It was then campaigned on the 1989 Peugeot Challenge, achieving a Peugeot Class win on the Manx Rally and third overall in the series. The 309 was then acquired by Simon Nutter who also campaigned it in the Peugeot Challenge, where he sparred with future World Rally Champion Richard Burns. A large accident ended Nutter’s title hopes, but the car lived to fight another day. Following a period of BTRDA events in the hands of Leigh Armstrong it passed through several hands before being laid up in the early 2000s. Unearthed by the vendor from its slumbers in North Wales in 2020, it was then despatched to Rally Prep of Cornwall for a comprehensive restoration, while retaining the car’s originality but bringing it up to full current FIA regulations. Finished in the livery of Burns’ 1991 RAC GTi, it is now offered complete with full FIA International Historic paperwork that gives it access to myriad top events, including the Goodwood FOS, CarFest, Silverstone Classic, Rally Legend in Italy, the McRae 25 etc. A rare opportunity

Underrated to this day, the GTi version of Peugeot’s 309 range was introduced in 1987 and, with not dissimilar performance and arguably superior handling to its much vaunted 205 GTi sibling, the newcomer quickly became a hot hatch to be reckoned with. Peugeot themselves certainly thought so, creating works rally versions, examples of which were used to good effect by such luminaries of the sport as Richard Burns and François Delecour, and it was Delecour who gave the model its best WRC result – first two-wheel drive car on the 1990 Monte Carlo Rally. The 1905cc engines of the Group A factory cars had an output of c.175bhp.
