November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 75

1963 MG 1100 MKI
A well loved example that the vendor regarded as part of the family.

Registration - PAG 639A

Chassis No. - G/AS3L-17463

M.O.T. - November 2022

Odometer - 4,310

The ‘60s were the heyday of badge engineering, and BMC’s ADO16 range of small family cars was marketed under the Austin, MG, Morris, Riley, Wolseley and Vanden Plas names. It was Britain’s best-selling car from 1963 to 1966 and 1968 to 1971 and no less than 2.1 million were sold all told during the model’s 11-year reign. Amazingly, by 2014 the number remaining in UK use had dwindled to just 1,717, just 189 of which were MG-branded. The figures will be far fewer again by now, making ‘PAG 639A’ a rare car by any standards

Its most recent keeper apparently called it ‘Betty’ and used the MG for chauffeur-driven wedding and event hire. Originally white, the bodywork was resprayed in Tartan Red in 2007 and largely repainted once again just three years ago. The engine had been reconditioned two years prior, but has driven a mere 4,310 miles even now, so is still barely run in. The vendor describes the car’s original Rose Taupe and grey interior trim as ‘characterfully worn but sound’ and the body, frames and floor are evidently equally solid, though one of the rear wing joints could apparently now benefit from some cosmetic paintwork. She regards the MG as a ‘reliable runner, that engenders smiles and waves wherever it goes’. It is now being sold complete with: tyres that are only 12 months old; an original BMC radio with teak surround (included but not fitted) that’s been updated for MP3 input; Heritage Certificate; original owner’s manual; Haynes workshop manual; original sales brochure; and a selection of documents dating back to 2008. A rare opportunity to acquire a sporty version of one of Britain’s all-time best sellers.

In summary:

  • A rare survivor in apparently good running order
  • 95 percent of the body professionally resprayed in 2018
  • Engine has completed just 4,310 miles since being reconditioned
