The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 75

1967 Hillman Imp Californian MKII
Warranted 83 miles from new

Registration - Not Registered

Chassis No. - B401006507HCO

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 83

This pristine, totally original and unmolested Forest Green Californian has covered just 83 miles in the 56 years since it vacated Rootes’ Linwood factory. Yes, really – that’s the equivalent of 1.46 miles per annum! Its early history is unclear, and it could be the Hillman of the same colour that was sold at auction by BCA in July 2004 with just 40 miles displayed on its odometer. What we do know is that it is generally considered to have been a display/demonstrator model of some description that appears never to have been registered with the DVLA, and has covered zero miles since purchased by the vendor at the H&H auction of November 2017. Indeed, all that’s happened in the intervening years is that it’s been suitably well stored and treated to a new water pump and battery, and had a filter inserted into its fuel system. You will not therefore not be greatly surprised to learn that the vendor currently regards the 875cc engine, four-speed manual transmission, two-door bodywork, paintwork and green vinyl interior trim as all being in, ‘excellent’ order. This time warp Imp is now seeking a suitably empathetic buyer with whom to enjoy the next phase of its unique existence. A surely unrepeatable opportunity for Imp aficionados everywhere.

The Californian coupe version of the Hillman Imp debuted in late 1966 and was in production from January 1967 to February 1970, during which

time only c.6100 examples were sold in the UK. Its price at the time of launch was £650 - £71 more than that of the Super Imp saloon. The fastback styling was penned by Ron Wisdom and differed from the saloon in having a lower roofline, more steeply raked windscreen and fixed rather opening rear window. Despite its sporty pretensions it was powered by the standard Imp four-cylinder engine of 37bhp.

In summary:

  • A totally original example that’s driven just 82 miles from new
  • Totally immaculate inside and out
  • Thought to have been a display model and never road registered
