November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 75

1990 Mini Checkmate
1275 cc engine

Registration - H643 VRH

Chassis No. - SAXXL2S1020464619

M.O.T. - No M.O.T.

Odometer - TBC

Once black, this cheeky-looking Checkmate represents a labour of love for the vendor who has owned the car since 2013, during which time it has been completely stripped and rebuilt to his own specification. The once black bodywork nowadays presents in white over British Racing Green, that’s matched to the original grey patterned fabric interior trim. In place of the original 998cc engine resides a 1275cc unit built by John Speed of Birmingham, complete with Kent camshaft, pair of SU carburettors and alloy radiator. Other upgrades include a set of Revolution alloy wheels, quartet of spotlights, bespoke facia with additional instruments, Kenwood CD/radio, alloy door fittings, gear-knob and handbrake trim, plus a pair of torpedo style door mirrors. The vendor presently regards the engine, manual gearbox, bodywork and paintwork as all being in ‘excellent’ order and the upholstery as ‘good’. Adding the original odometer’s mileage to that of the Mini’s replacement one, we estimate the current total to be 58,569.

It is doubtful if any other model of car can match the classic Mini for the number of special editions it inspired. Three Mini City-based ones that were produced for the model years 1989 and 1990 were the Mini Racing Green, Mini Flame Red and Mini Checkmate, the UK production for all three of which was 2,500 cars, making each a relatively rare sight. The checkmate was launched in the February of 1990 and featured related decals on black bodywork matched to so-called black ‘Crayons’ fabric interior trim. It was powered by a 998cc version of the A series engine that drove through a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic gearbox to a 3.44:1 final drive, as found on the original Mini-Cooper.

In summary:

  • The subject of a full restoration by the vendor
  • Equipped with an uprated John Speed 1275cc engine
  • Comes with a number of desirable upgrades
