The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 75

1998 Land Rover Discovery 50th Anniversary

Registration - TBC

Chassis No. - SALLJGMF7WA792819

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 52,450

This notably lovely Discovery I has had just two keepers from new, and its very modest indicated total mileage of 52,450 is backed up by an excellent MOT record. It is one of the treasured 50th Anniversary models, of which only 1,000 examples were made - 200 in gold and 800, like the sale car, in iridescent Atlantis Blue. The unique specification also included Bahama Beige leather interior trim, Boost alloy wheels, air conditioning, leather-rimmed steering wheel and 50th anniversary body badges. Far from being wrapped in cotton wool, the vendor informs us that the Disco is ‘used frequently and starts and runs well’, and adds that ‘everything is original’ and the vehicle is pretty much ‘as it left the factory 24 years ago, though could arguably now do with a valet’. Power comes courtesy of the optional 2.5-litre 300Tdi diesel engine that drives through a manual five-speed gearbox. It is equipped with the very useful fold-away rear seats, so will accommodate up to seven adults when required. We understand that the current set of Goodyear all terrain tyres are four years old, with plenty of life remaining. The vendor’s current view of the vehicle is that its engine, transmission and electrical system are in ‘excellent’ order and the paintwork and upholstery are both in ‘good’ condition. He is now offering the Land Rover complete with radio and multi-stack CD player, original handbooks, a selection of old MOTs, and a current advisory-free one that’s valid until October 17.

Introduced in 1989 and now in its fifth generation, the Discovery was Land Rover’s first new model range since the launch of the Range Rover in 1970. A highly competent family car/utility vehicle, it quickly established a loyal following. The first iteration (as per the sale car) had a 10-year reign, giving way to the only mildly modified Discovery II in late 1998.

In summary:

  • One of only 800 Atlantis Blue Anniversary models made
  • Just two owners and a warranted 52,450 miles from new
  • Seven-seat accommodation
