This excellent 1972 Ford Escort Mexico has been beautifully restored to take it back to its mid-1970s heyday. A real part of British rally history, it was driven in the 1973 British Rally Championship by noted driver Chris Lord. He was a contemporary of Roger Clark, Peter Clark, Jimmy McRae and Jim Clark, and was widely respected in the BRC. Sponsored by Eric Jackson Ford in Barnsley – Jackson himself a 1964 British Rally Champion, who later developed what was then Europe’s largest privately-owned Ford dealership – this ex-Lord rally car has since been rally-prepared back to its original specification. “It is not full of filler like most shells available, and has no rot or rust whatsoever,” says the vendor.
The full nut and bolt restoration, in 2015, saw every part either new or reconditioned, including full running gear. The 711 block and engine, genuine Mexico four-speed gearbox and rear 377 limited-slip differential are all reconditioned, and the suspension is all-new. The bare metal respray also involved new doors, bonnet and boot. “It is fully documented and has receipts to back it up.” The vendor says it was all put together using a fully-investigated and genuine wiring loom. It has since been stored in a heated for garage, only travelling on a trailer to the garage for MOTs (despite being MOT exempt) in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2023. This is evidenced by an odometer that now reads just 435 miles. “In my opinion it must be one of the best available”.
They add that ‘CHE345K’ now drives superbly, “has never seen rain, and even has the stickers still on the tyres. There’s a complete history of all previous keepers, and a letter of authenticity confirming its Mexico heritage.” A superb addition to any collection, this ex-Chris Lord 1972 Ford Escort Mexico is a tantalising proposition that understandably is described as simply being in ‘excellent’ condition throughout. It’s now ready to take pride of place in any expertly-curated car collection.
