November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 78

1927 Austin Seven Chummy
Subject to a recent nut and bolt rebuild by the previous keeper.

Registration - YH 2488

Chassis No. - A43975

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 75,704

This truly adorable Chummy was the subject of a nut and bolt rebuild courtesy of the previous owner. Having acquired the car in November last year, the vendor then treated it to a complete respray, so it is small wonder that he now regards the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission as all being in ‘excellent’ order. Stunningly-presented in green over black that’s matched to green upholstery and carpets, ‘YH 2488’ has self-evidently had many hours of love and attention lavished upon it, and must surely be a serious consideration for any member of the Austin Seven fraternity seeking a near perfect vintage example. It is now offered for sale due to the deteriorating health of the vendor, and comes complete with full weather gear plus a comprehensive history file in which all work carried out is documented.

Apparently inspired by the Peugeot Quadrilette, the now immortal Austin Seven was announced in 1922. It is amazing to think that its tiny splash-lubricated 696cc (soon increased to 747cc) engine was the design of an 18-year old draughtsman called Stanley Edge, and the Seven immediately became the smallest four cylinder-engined car on the British market. It featured four-wheel brakes, suspension by semi-elliptic transverse spring at the front and quarter elliptic units at the rear, while the steering was by a worm and wheel system. Taken to heart by the British public, the Seven remained in production from 1922 until 1939, during which time some 290,000 were produced. It was also manufactured under licence in France, Germany, Japan and America. The remaining cars are a vital element of the vintage movement.

In summary:

  • The subject of a nut and bolt rebuild by the previous keeper
  • Treated to a complete respray within the past 12 months
  • Comes complete with comprehensive history file
