An iconic rally car of the 1980s, this MG Metro 6R4 is an immaculate example that the vendor describes as simply ‘excellent’ throughout. It has had just three former keepers, with the previous owner having it for more than a decade. A successful businessman, they were passionate about rallying and owned a top-notch motorsport team for many years. The campaigned ‘Q777RDS’ for more than a decade. The vendor acquired this MG Metro 6R4 in April 2024.
The vendor says ‘Q777RDS’ was bought as an unrallied Clubman shell from the original Group B stock following the earlier ban of Group B rallying after the 1986 season. It was registered with its ‘Q’ plate from the outset. This car is 2WD and features a 2.5-litre Hart 420R engine, mated to an uprated Hewland FGC gearbox. According to eWRC records, it was originally campaigned by well-known driver Murray Grierson from 1989 to 1992. Debuting on the 1989 Tweedies Daihatsu Stages, notable results included five rally wins. Other owners of the car are listed on the go-to rally database.
The vendor reports that, in September 2023, a “thoroughly expert, totally comprehensive and utterly painstaking nine-month restoration project” was undertaken. Contributors included Ronaldson Mechanical Services, Highland Speed Shop, Hewland Classic and PDS Racing, Mardi Gras Motorsport, Panel Craft, Hestan Composites, Foss Fabrications and more. “The car has new sills, a proper tank floor by Panel Craft, and has been epoxy primed and given several layers of 2K paint,” adds the vendor.
Much of this remarkable MG Metro 6R4 is pretty much factory-fresh. The engine, rebuilt by Jim Oddy, has covered just 300 miles since. The rebuilt gearbox has covered just five miles. The AP Racing twin-plate clutch has covered 25 miles, and the Proflex two- or three-way suspension has covered only 300 miles. Both 15-inch gravel and 16-inch tarmac wheels are included, there’s a Stilo WRC+ intercom, while the seats, harnesses and fire extinguishers were all new in February 2024. A comprehensive collection of spare parts includes original Bilstein dampers, driveshafts, a Hart 420R cylinder head, pistons and rings, coil pack, HT leads and more.
‘Q777RDS’ comes with a Motorsport UK Vehicle Passport and is eligible for Stage Rally – Category 1 events until November 2023. The vendor adds they will also provide the successful bidder with “all manner of photographic evidence of the car’s rebuilds and other documentation once the car is sold”.
