So here’s a head turner for you – a very tidy-looking first generation Mustang coupe that was repainted Stateside in its original livery of Primrose Yellow, that’s complemented by a gloss black rather than vinyl-covered roof, as would have originally been the case. The deluxe Parchment-coloured interior retains its original door cards, wood grain steering wheel, handles and kick plates, and the pony car rides on styled steel wheels shod with Maxxis whitewall tyres. It is an all-steel example that the vendor informs us has ‘good rust-free sheet metal and solid floors and sills. It boasts its original C Code 289ci V8 engine, C4 transmission and drum brakes, but benefits from new rear leaf springs, complete exhaust system and electronic ignition. The facia is also largely original, though the ammeter has been converted into a voltmeter. Recent maintenance has included a general service and new air filter for the Holley carburettor.
The vendor presently credits the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission with all being in ‘good’ order and says ‘the Mustang puts a huge grin on your face and gets lots of attention, so the sale is a very reluctant one but the car has to go’. Though unrequired by law, it comes complete with a current, advisory-free MOT that’s valid until February 4 2022.
Ford’s first generation Mustang had its initial public viewing at the New York World’s Fair of April 1964. It was styled in house under the direction of Joe Oros and utilised as many components as possible from the existing Falcon and Fairlane models, in order to minimise cost. Soon available in coupe, convertible and fastback guise, it could be bought with a range of straight-six and V8 engines.
