The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 79

1970 Ford Cortina GT
** NO RESERVE ** Same family ownership from new

Registration - YPW 381J

Chassis No. - BA97KM42009

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 62,000

The Cortina was by far the Britain’s best-selling car throughout the 1970s – available in two and four-door saloon or estate versions, the model dominated our roads. Five generations were produced between 1962 and 1982, each of which notched up over a million sales. How amazing then that just 10 examples of the MKII GT version as offered here are currently licensed for UK roads, with a further three on SORN. What makes ‘YPW 381J’ an even rarer proposition is that it has remained within the same family from new, passing from father to son. Finished in red and trimmed in black vinyl it has apparently never required any welding and, though dry stored since 1984, still runs and drives. The vendor currently considers the engine, four-speed manual gearbox, four-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition, and is now selling the Ford complete with aftermarket voltmeter, leather-rimmed steering wheel, push-button radio and a degree of paperwork. The odometer presently registers a very credible 62,000 miles.

At introduction the Cortina was powered by a 1,193cc three-bearing version of the company’s already well-known four-cylinder, OHV ‘Kent’ engine, though the option of a five-bearing 1,500cc unit followed within months. Initially the mechanical specification echoed that of the proven Anglia, with four-speed manual gearbox, drum brakes all round, MacPherson strut front suspension and live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, and recirculating ball steering. The reshaped MKII model of 1966 was penned by Roy Haynes and, though fractionally shorter than the original car, offered more interior space. A new five bearing 1,300cc version of the ubiquitous ‘Kent’ engine was introduced at the outset, while a 1,600cc variant with cross-flow cylinder head followed a year later in place of the previous 1500cc unit. As before there was the option of a GT version with increased output, the resulting 93bhp being achieved by the combination of an uprated cylinder head, camshaft, exhaust manifold and carburettor; it was sufficient to endow the model with a top speed just short of 100mph.

In summary

  • Same family ownership from new
  • Never welded and claimed to be in ‘good’ all-round condition
  • Thought to be one of just 13 MKII GTs remaining
