The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 8

1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe Saloon
*** NO RESERVE *** Rare, desirable RHD example

Registration - LLL 124

Chassis No. - T29567

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 99,399 miles

This splendid item of ‘50s Americana hails from the time when Chevrolet dominated the American sales charts. Examples are decidedly rare in the UK, especially in righthand drive form, as per the sale car. According to Experian Autocheck, it has been UK registered from new and had just three keepers to date, the current one of which has retained it for no less than 25 years. During his tenure it has been the subject of a rolling restoration, and he now classes the 3.5-litre (216.5ci) Stovebolt straight-six engine, three-speed manual transmission and red vinyl interior trim as ‘excellent’, and the four-door bodywork and black paintwork as ‘good’. The specification is seemingly exactly as the car was made 69 years ago, the only concession to modern motoring being the installation of flashing indicators in addition to the original semaphore arms. Recent use has been confined to special occasions when, we were not surprised to learn, ‘it’s been much admired wherever it’s gone’. The proud vendor confirms that the oil temperature and pressure are both as they should be and the odometer currently registers an unwarranted by utterly credible total mileage of 99,399. A rare opportunity.

Chevrolet introduced its new Special and Deluxe ranges in 1949, both of which were available in Styleline (notchback) and Fleetline (fastback) guise. They were initially powered by the company’s sole powerplant of the time, the legendary Stovebolt overhead valve straight-six unit. The popular model line-up continued virtually unchanged until 1952, aside of the options of a 3.9-litre (235.5ci) engine, automatic transmission and convertible and estate versions that were introduced late in the production run.

In summary:

  • Very rare righthand drive example with manual transmission
  • Has remained in the current ownership for 25 years
  • The subject of a lengthy rolling restoration
