May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 8

1974 Triumph TR6

Registration - AGU 770N

Chassis No. - CF/35828-U

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 21,000 miles

‘AGU 770N’ began its life in America, and its engine still features carburettors rather than the Lucas fuel injection system fitted to all UK specification cars. However, the carburettors are user-friendly SUs rather than the Strombergs it is likely to have had originally. The car presents well, its tidy British Racing Green paintwork being complemented by a beige hood and beige upholstery, while it rides on refurbished steel wheels complete with stainless trims. In recent times it has benefited from the installation of a professionally rebuilt overdrive gearbox, 3.45:1 differential, replacement driveshafts and a pair of Spax rear dampers, as well as many other new items of suspension and running gear. The TR is now offered complete with electric engine fan, an ‘excellent’ set of tyres, Moto-Lita small boss woodrim steering wheel, pair of spot lights and a current MOT valid until October 6.

Triumph’s TR2 was launched in 1953, kickstarting a series of successful two-seater sports cars that ended in 1981 with the last of the TR8s. The evolution was steady but continuous and, in the same way that the early cars all evolved from their predecessors, the TR6 that first saw the light of day in late 1968 was effectively a cleverly updated TR5. For the body revisions Triumph naturally turned to the Italian who had styled the TR4/TR5 – Michelotti. However, he could not meet their schedule and the squaring off of the nose and tail were eventually achieved by Karmann. The car’s underpinnings were broadly as per the TR5. A total of 94,619 examples were produced, a mere 8,370 of which were sold on the home market.

In summary:

  • A very tidy example that was originally exported to the USA
  • Benefits from a number of recently renewed or refurbished parts
  • Specification includes overdrive, electric fan, spot lights and woodrim steering wheel
