September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 8

1997 Volvo 960 Estate
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - N856 KRO

Chassis No. - YV1965936T1032554

M.O.T. - March 2023

Odometer - 105,372

Displaying a few minor battle scars, but looking like it could comfortably double its existing indicated total mileage of 105,372, ‘N856 KRO’ has been in its current ownership for just under a year, prior to which it was apparently the property of an engineer who ‘maintained it meticulously’. We are informed that during his tenure the suspension, braking system, air conditioning and other items all received attention as required, and the vendor nowadays classes the engine and automatic transmission as ‘good to excellent’, the five-door bodywork and black leather interior trim as ‘good’ and the silver paintwork as ‘average to good’. He adds that the Volvo ‘starts, runs and stops as it should’ and is only parting with the car as he needs something with a higher seating position. This eminently practical vehicle is now offered complete with full length roof rails, tow hook, glass sun roof, headlamp wash/wipe and integral radio/cassette system.

Beloved by Britain’s army of antique dealers, Volvo’s cavernous 960 estate car was a key member of the manufacturer’s 900 Series executive range that reigned from 1990 to 1998, during which some 632,710 saloons and estates were produced. The biggest difference between the 960 and the outgoing 760 model on which it was based, was the option of an all-new aluminium 24-valve DOHC petrol engine which, following the model’s facelift of 1994, became available in 2473cc capacity. It is this version that’s fitted to the sale car. ‘N856 KRO’ also benefits from the independent rear suspension system that became standard on the 960 estate from 1995 onwards. Built to last and almost unsurpassed in their ability to swallow everything from holiday luggage to wardrobes, good 960 estates are still eagerly sought after.

In summary:

  • A seven-owner example currently indicating 105,372 total miles
  • Apparently ‘meticulously maintained’ by its previous keeper
  • A very well-equipped, highly practical vehicle
