Lot 80

1976 MGB Roadster

Registration - SPW 912R

Chassis No. - GHN5-423800-G

M.O.T - Exempt

Odometer - 122,000

Built in 1976, but not registered until April the following year, ‘SPW 912R’ is a righthand drive, home market car finished in British Racing Green that’s paired with black cloth interior trim. The vendor informs us that it’s a matching numbers example that ‘drives well, has had a little welding and would be a great base for a project’. He presently regards the interior trim, engine and transmission as being in ‘good’ condition and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. HPI clear and with 122,000 miles presently displayed on the odometer, the MG is now being offered complete with Minilite-style alloy wheels and leather-rimmed steering wheel, plus a comprehensive selection of paperwork that includes a Heritage Certificate and numerous bills, old MOTs and tax discs.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the model was only available in roadster form – the hatchback GT derivative not being offered until 1965. The MKII roadster of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater.

In summary:

  • A matching numbers home market example
  • Comes complete with lots of paperwork including Heritage Certificate
  • Extras include alloy wheels and leather-rimmed steering wheel
