The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 80

1978 Ford Capri Ghia 2.0

Registration - BFH 590T

Chassis No. - GAECUP08237

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 98,700

Immortalised by The Professionals TV series and a serial winner on the race track, Europe’s answer to the American pony car is now a well-established collectors’ car, good examples of which are increasingly keenly sought. The tidy Capri offered here pairs 2-litre Pinto power with top-of-the range Ghia interior trim, and green bodywork and a black vinyl roof with tan-coloured cloth upholstery. The Capri has had a relatively modest five owners to date, the most recent of whom acquired the car in March 2021. He informs us that it has recently benefited from having the cylinder head skimmed and the replacement of its water pump, radiator, window seals, spare wheel and tyres. He adds that ‘BFH 590T’ ‘drives as a Capri should’, and currently grades the engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and interior as ‘good’ and the paintwork as ‘average’. He is now selling it complete with period-correct alloy wheels, factory-fitted sunroof and original Ford push-button radio. The odometer currently registers a total of 98,786 miles.

Ford’s Capri was launched at the 1969 Brussels Motorshow. The fastback coupe was intended to do for Europe what the Mustang had done for the USA – ie it was our ‘pony’ car, and would apparently have been called Colt had Mitsubishi not bagged the name first. The monocoque body featured independent front suspension by MacPherson struts and a live axle with leaf springs at the rear. Braking was by discs/drums and the steering by rack and pinion. The newcomer was offered with a generous choice of engines. Gearboxes, like the powerplants, tended to be common to the Cortina and the model was offered in numerous levels of trim/specification from L (basic) to Ghia (luxury). Worthwhile improvements came with the MKII versions of 1974 and the quadruple headlamp MKIII cars introduced in 1978. Two-litre versions of the MKIII were powered by SOHC Pinto units of 100bhp output – sufficient for a 0-60mph time of around 10.5 seconds and top speed of c.110mph.

In summary:

  • A tidy five-owner example
  • Has recently benefited from a number of replacement parts
  • Comes complete with sunroof and yet-to-be fitted electric aerial
