Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 80

1985 Buick Riviera Two-Door Coupe

Chassis No. - 1G4EZ57Y6FE432135

Registration - B870 RLP

M.O.T. - November 2021

Odometer – 82,900

Never officially imported to the UK, the Riviera is therefore a rare sight on our roads. This apparently tidy lefthand drive example recently found its way to Millford Auto sales in Hopedale Massachusetts, from where the current and so far only UK owner acquired it. It was imported to these shores in September of last year and there is paperwork to confirm that all related duties were paid prior to it being registered and issued with the registration ‘B870 RLP’. The accompanying history is apparently limited, but the Buick does come with its original build sheet listing all the options, paint codes etc. There is also a windscreens sticker indicating that it was treated to a 5W30 oil change in May 2020. Its black two-door bodywork is complemented a four-seat grey cloth interior and wheels with chromed wire spoke hubcaps and white-walled tyres. The 1985 model year Riviera was offered with a choice of no less than five engines, and that powering the sale car is 5.0-litre (307ci) Oldsmobile V8 that drives through a four-speed automatic gearbox. The odometer currently registers a total of 82,900 miles.

The sixth generation Buick Riviera was produced from 1979 to 1985. It shared its underpinnings with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado and was notable for being not just the first front-wheel drive Riviera but the first front-wheel drive car in Buick’s history. Manufactured in Linden New Jersey, it was available in both Coupe and Convertible guise. It proved to be a success for General Motors, with some 65,305 finding homes in the 1985 model year alone.

In summary:

  • A tidy example of a popular American coupe
  • One of the more powerful versions equipped with a 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine
  • Specification includes a Delco-GM/Bose radio cassette system
